The Funky Melting Pot

This weblog is about funky music delivered as DJ Mixes. We cover mostly Lounge/Chillout but try to keep things as diverse as possible.

RH83 - Big City Life (Chillhouse vs Lounge Mix)

July 16th, 2017

There is a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) between 116 and 120 BPM where competition is tight in the Dance world. Here all sort of sub-genres rub shoulders, show the middle finger, and constantly strive to get the attention of the buyer. Into these stormy and dangerous seas has stepped a new sub-genre of the experimental House scene – Lounge Music. No one saw it coming. Is this not the music of the chillista? The relaxed? The zero f*cks given crowd? Well, not these days apparently. Lounge has stepped into the fray with some genuine funky contenders – tracks that would make any club owner proud. Here are some of them but over the months we will haply showcase many more. Get your gear on – we are going into the DMZ …enjoy!

RL136 - Vintage del Mar (Café del Mar Tribute Compilation)

July 14th, 2017

While the Café del Mar series of early compilations (from the 90s onwards) did not start the Lounge movement, it certainly did add huge impetus to the movement. At the time I was listening to that World Music and Transglobal Sound which was much “harder” than the Café del Mar sound and was much more closely related to House Music. But from the second I heard the del Mar sound, I loved it. It has a gentler effect on the psyche and seems to carry with it some of the calm that you would expect the sound of ocean waves to have on you …if you have a sensitive constitution of course.

But the key thing about the del Mar series for me is not the sound, it’s the variety. I said it before and I will say it again, it helped me appreciate different sounds from different parts of the world. This tribute gives a good taste of this variety and, I hope, gives a fitting celebration of all that is Café del Mar. The series continues today but for me it has lost that edge of earlier times. This is not the fault of the Compilers – it’s just that they do not make this music like this anymore. Enjoy the good times. Cheers.

RL135 - Lounge Pimp (Lounge Mix)

July 12th, 2017

All that is old is not therefore necessarily excellent; all that is new is not despicable on that account alone. Let what is really meritorious be pronounced so by the candid judge after due investigation; blockheads alone are influenced by the opinion of others. -Hindu Drama

RHH20 - Melodic Street Knowledge (Hip Hop Compilation)

July 10th, 2017

A celebration of the melodic and unquestionably funky Hip Hop of the early and late nineties. When it comes to that scene, many of the Usual Suspects are here: The Roots, 2pac, Biggie, Pete Rock, Talib Kweli, Arrested Development, Tribe Called Quest etc etc. The thing about melodic Hip Hop, and it seems to be a strong characteristic (with some exceptions), is that there is meaningful and often clever lyrical content in the Raps. There is a perceptible intelligence and effort of thought that went into the rhymes. You can never doubt it when listening to The Roots or Tribe Called Quest. These people were artists, and they took pride in something they saw as an art. This is far removed from much of the bubblegum they make these days! For me this is highlighted in my favourite track in this lot – “Nobody Do It Better” by Keith Murray. Check this out:

Keith Murray, the lyrical hannibal flow cannibal
Animalistic tough guy man handle you
I came into this b*tch my style hardcore
Then I heard a hater say he ain't fire no more!
What?! That was me standin on your block with the razor blade
In my mouth back when hip hop was hip hop
For those who don't know or forget

What a track!! Anyway, enjoy these babies ...they are to Hip Hop what Chillhouse is to House Music! Cheers!

RL134 - Between Ocean & Forest (Jazzy Lounge and Latin Chillout)

July 8th, 2017

In this episode we place ourselves in the Islands and find ourselves listening to a combination of Latin and Jazzy Lounge. We start out on a romantic note, with some sweet crooning in Spanish. One does not have to understand a language to get a feel for love and beauty and both “Amor Profundo” and “Herido de Sombras” are fitting and quaint examples. Love seeps out of their every note, every backing instrument, and every back-up singers voice. It is an absolute feast of Love and is sure to get you thinking of a loved one.

While “The New Jazz Five” is not exactly the most Jazzy of tracks, what it is represents Health Food for the sensitive soul. The vocal poetic mumblings, the sweet strings from the Spanish Guitar, the funky percussion, the flute – perfection. “Soulalchemy” is not only cleverly named, but it is also a bit of a shock to the senses. Here is this Michael Jackson like vocalist singing over Latin beats rather than R&B. It works! Great song for those who cannot stomach traditional R&B but kinda like the vocal delivery.

“Faraway” by Kora3000 seems to me to be the perfect travel track. The feel is of “faraway” places where people have drinks with little umbrellas and are generally happy for no other reason than being alive. Who would not enjoy that …even if for only a few minutes.

But really I could go on and on about the highlights but for me, if there was just one track I would beg you to listen to, it would be “Konspiration” – thrown in as a bonus at the end. OMG! The keys, the horns, the vocals, the lyrics, the arrangement, the whole – FIRE! There is something about it that just feels ridiculously romantic and impossibly mixed up between Soul and Jazz. It is just incredibly beautiful. Don’t miss it. Cheers and enjoy!

RH82 - Silken Chords (Soulful House Mix)

July 5th, 2017

A selection of Soulful House tracks with a healthy dose of old-school feel. When it comes to Soulful House, the chords are often what it’s all about and not always the vocals. In fact many of the tracks here are Instrumentals with the odd vocal sample thrown in. Soulful House, unlike Soul Music, does not depend on diva-like silky Vocals. The instrumentals can stand strong on their own. Fashionmista, Forever And A Day, Everynight, Let The Music, Voices of Hope, Emerald City, Do You Want it, and One are all excellent examples of glorious instrumental Soulful House Fire! There is heat here. “Let The Music”, “Emerald City”, “Do You Want It” and “One” are, in particular, wicked! Enjoy and have a great week. Cheers.

RL133 - Free Chill Agents (Chillout Lounge Mix)

July 1st, 2017

This weekend we listen to some choir music supported by gentle beats, crazy funky guitar sounds with haunting Indian chanting in the background, insane percussion with soothing pads in the background, some altogether too deep ambient Buddha Lounge chillware, some otherworldly aborigine/African sounds and, as always, great electronica. It’s a mixture of all sorts - the mood is chilled, the beats are involving, the grooves are fabulous. Lounge at its flexible finest. Enjoy.

RH81 - A Muse (Chillhouse Mix)

June 29th, 2017

Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don't and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said that it'd be easy, they just promised it would be worth it. -Unknown

RP10 - Eclectic: Episode 1 (Inter-Genre Compilation)

June 26th, 2017

‘eclectic’ as in, made up of different things from different sources. Lets face it, that’s what the Funky Melting Pot is all about. The One becomes the many, and the many become the One. Love or worship the One, and surely you would have to love or worship the many too right? Same for music – we love one genre and then we come to love all. The ‘Eclectic Vibes’ series will represent a trawl through multiple genres just for funkywise tracks …lasting funkyware that is standing the test of time. No newbie stuff here.

I apologise in advance if swearing offends you. Sadly (for you), an overwhelming number of Hip Hop tracks that can be said to have stood the test of time are unavoidable for the serious music collector. Maybe future episodes will include clean tracks only …but seriously …ignoring and judging the language of the times is just head-in-the-sand stuff. Its acceptable and maybe even commendable to choose not to use it …and to choose to associate with people who do not but to then wipe out vast sections of arts and culture …well …yeah. A bit of a leap that for me … Anyway, enjoy …I hope.

RH80 - organic (Deep House Mix)

June 24th, 2017

Deep House has many flavours and almost all popular ones are played at 125 BPM and beyond. But down there, in the rarely visited depths, deep in the bosom of the unfathomable, resides a Deep House culture acutely schooled in the arts of low BPM funkyware. We are talking between 110 and 116 beats per minute. It is a peculiar experience …sometimes even a shock to the senses. At these sort of pedestrian speeds, something transmutes Deep House and it’s familiar sounds. The grooves hit harder, the bass lifts you at a much more rapid pace - things are altogether just so much funkier! This stuff is gold. This is what you would hear in proper places away from the main road …dark jazzy spaces filled with epic characters. This is the path less trodden people. Enjoy it!
